Amid queues at filling stations in Lagos and Ogun states, reports indicate a resurgence in black market activities as petroleum marketers attribute the scarcity to a shortage in supply.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) confirmed the absence of products in its Apapa depots, exacerbating concerns about potential fuel scarcity. Long queues of motorists were observed at various filling stations across both states, hampering traffic flow.
At several stations, including Oando, Conoil, and TotalEnergies, fuel was either unavailable or in limited supply, intensifying pressure on the few stations with available stock. The situation prompted some individuals to resort to purchasing fuel from black market vendors, further complicating the issue.
The scarcity began to impact transport fares, with some routes experiencing fare hikes. While some stations gradually began to receive supplies, others remained closed for business.
Officials from the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and the NNPC expressed optimism that the situation would improve after the Easter break, attributing the supply hiccup to logistical challenges and increased demand during the holiday period.
However, conflicting reports emerged regarding the status of fuel availability, with some sources acknowledging shortages while others downplayed the severity of the situation. Amidst assurances of ongoing efforts to address the issue, concerns lingered regarding potential panic buying and market speculation.
