The Defense Headquarters confirmed on Sunday that a lieutenant of the Nigerian Army lost his life, while four other military personnel sustained injuries during a terrorist ambush in Borno State on Friday, April 5. However, the engagement resulted in the death of six terrorists.
The ambush occurred during a confrontation between the troops of Operation Hadin Kai and the terrorists, sparking a fierce gun battle. The wounded soldiers are currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital, as stated by Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations.
During the operation, troops successfully recovered five AK-47 rifles and 103 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition from the terrorists. Despite the setback, efforts to track down the remaining terrorists who initiated the ambush are ongoing.
In a statement, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward detailed the encounter: “On April 5, 2024, at about 0935hrs, troops of Operation Hadin Kai encountered a terrorist ambush along Road Buratai – Buni Gari. Sadly, during the encounter, troops lost a Lieutenant who was killed in action. While four personnel were wounded in action and receiving treatment. Troops’ reinforcement pursued the terrorists to their hideout within the Timbuktu Triangle and made contact. Troops neutralised six of the terrorists, recovering five AK-47 rifles and 103 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. The remaining terrorists ran in disarray. However, troops are in the hunt for the remnant terrorists that fled the firefight.”
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in the region as they combat insurgency.
