In a significant stride towards combating cybercrime, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has apprehended a suspect, Muhammed Zenabdin, in Abuja for criminal conspiracy and possession of suspected counterfeit currency.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the arrest follows diligent efforts by the NPF-NCCC to curb the proliferation of cybercrime in the country. Acting on credible intelligence, operatives conducted a raid on a suspected cybercrime hideout in Garki II, FCT, leading to the successful apprehension of Muhammed Zenabdin.
During the raid, law enforcement discovered compelling evidence, including suspected counterfeit currency totaling $100,000, along with sophisticated counterfeit detection equipment, international passports, mobile phones, and a luxury vehicle. Despite the escape of other members of the criminal gang, Zenabdin was captured.
Zenabdin provided confessional statements and offered valuable information to aid in the apprehension of other members of the gang. Following the investigation’s conclusion, the suspect(s) will face arraignment in court.
This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to tackle cybercrime and counterfeit currency syndicates in Nigeria. In a similar operation in February, the Gombe State Police Command dismantled two currency syndicates in possession of counterfeit notes totaling $56,300 and N265,000.
