In the ongoing trial of Chidinma Ojukwu for the alleged murder of Michael Ataga, the late CEO of Super TV, Dr. Richard Somiari, a forensic expert, presented crucial evidence before the Lagos State High Court. Somiari, who serves as the director and consultant for the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, testified that the DNA blood sample discovered on Chidinma’s red dress matched that of the victim, Michael Ataga.
Appearing as the 11th prosecution witness, Somiari informed the court that his office received 21 different items, including the stained red dress worn by Chidinma, an army green T-shirt, and DNA samples from the suspects. He detailed how his team conducted various forensic tests on urine, blood, gastric content, and bile, with the aim of establishing a connection between the suspect, the crime scene, and the victim.
During cross-examination by the defense counsels, Somiari clarified the procedures followed in the toxicology analysis and the submission of forensic reports. He emphasized his role as a forensic analyst and the limitations of his expertise, particularly regarding toxicology.
Responding to queries about the testing of blood samples found at the crime scene, Somiari stated that not all samples were submitted for analysis. He clarified that the markers indicated in his report were unrelated to the video evidence presented during the trial.
The defense counsels further questioned Somiari about the absence of DNA samples from one of the defendants, Adedapo Quadri, and his non-involvement in the toxicology analysis. Somiari affirmed these points and clarified that some samples were stored but not tested.
Following Somiari’s testimony, Justice Yetunde Adesanya adjourned the trial until May 30 for further proceedings. Chidinma Ojukwu, along with Adedapo Quadri and Chioma Egbuchu, faces charges ranging from conspiracy to murder and theft in connection with Michael Ataga’s death.
