The Federal Government, acting through the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, has taken decisive action by revoking 924 dormant mineral licences. This announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, during a press conference held in Abuja.
The revoked licences comprise 528 exploration licences, 20 mining leases, 101 quarry licences, and 273 small-scale mining licences. This move follows the ministry’s previous revocation of 1,633 mineral titles granted to non-compliant mining companies in November.
Minister Alake emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing the solid minerals sector to enhance its international competitiveness. He urged all stakeholders involved in the sector to rectify any wrongdoing and embrace transparency.
During the briefing, Minister Alake highlighted the issue of licence racketeering within the sector, prompting the ministry’s decision to take action. He ensured that due process was followed, including providing adequate notice to concerned parties through the official gazette of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The notice, published on December 27, 2023, granted a 30-day period for affected parties to regularize their status and provide explanations for the dormancy of their licences.
In accordance with the principle of “use it or lose it” and after fair consideration, Minister Alake announced the immediate revocation of the dormant licences.
This measure underscores the government’s commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and efficient utilization of mineral resources for the benefit of the nation.
