Tragedy struck at the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge in Lagos State as a male adult, known only as Azeez, reportedly leaped into the lagoon following accusations of theft. The incident unfolded around 10:45 a.m. on Friday when Azeez was allegedly pursued by another individual, ultimately leading to his fatal plunge.
According to sources, the director of operations for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency in Lagos Central received a distress call regarding the incident. Upon arrival at the scene, he encountered a gathering of onlookers by the waterside, where Azeez’s lifeless body was discovered.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced Azeez dead, confirming that he had drowned in the lagoon. It was revealed that prior to his tragic demise, Azeez had been accused of stealing bags of cement, prompting him to take drastic action and jump into the water.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that investigations were underway. The deceased’s body was transported to the Mainland General Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
This unfortunate event comes in the wake of other recent drownings in Lagos State, including that of Nimotalahi Ishola, who plunged into the lagoon while aboard a ferry in Igando. Additionally, the Lagos State Police Command reported a total of seven drowning incidents in various parts of the state the previous week, occurring at hotel swimming pools, beaches, and the lagoon.
