The Edo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki, has announced a significant increase in the minimum wage for state workers, effective May 1, 2024. Speaking during the commissioning of the Labour House, a facility constructed for organized labour in the state, Governor Obaseki disclosed the wage adjustment, which raises the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000.
Governor Obaseki expressed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of state workers, highlighting the importance of ensuring a decent standard of living for all employees. He also pledged to further augment workers’ monthly salaries beyond the N70,000 benchmark, contingent upon the Federal Government’s approval of a similar wage increase for its workforce.
The governor affirmed that comprehensive details regarding the new minimum wage structure would be unveiled to the public during the upcoming Workers’ Day celebration on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Additionally, the newly inaugurated Labour House, dedicated to organized labour entities such as the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, was named after the former governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole. This initiative reflects the state government’s recognition of the pivotal role played by labour unions in advocating for workers’ rights and welfare.
