Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, has issued a stern warning to contractors responsible for the completion of the Lokoja-Benin federal road, threatening to terminate their contracts due to alleged shoddy work. Speaking to journalists in Auchi, Edo State, Umahi expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the project and disclosed his directive for immediate action.
Umahi revealed that he had met with representatives of the contractors handling the project in Abuja, where he emphasized the need for adherence to specifications and warned against delays. He stressed the importance of conducting a comprehensive audit of ongoing projects within seven days to assess the status of work, personnel capacity, and equipment utilization.
Expressing concern over the alleged overpricing of the project, Umahi highlighted the need for transparency and efficiency. He disclosed that the project’s initial cost of N121 billion had ballooned to over N870 billion before his tenure, prompting a review process aimed at optimizing resources.
The minister outlined the agreement reached during meetings with contractors to re-scope the project, incorporating both concrete and asphalt elements to enhance durability. However, Umahi criticized the contractors for failing to meet their commitments and questioned their capacity to execute the project effectively.
Umahi emphasized the government’s stance on contract enforcement, stating that contractors must adhere to specified rates and timelines or risk termination. He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to ensuring accountability and preventing contractors from exploiting the system for personal gain.
