Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, has called for a diplomatic approach between the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and others, and the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, regarding the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project. The organization emphasized the need for private discussions rather than public confrontations, which could hinder project progress.
In a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze expressed concern over baseless criticisms directed at the project and Senator Dave Umahi’s efforts. The organization questioned the motives behind these attacks, asserting that they do not serve the nation’s interests.
Ohanaeze denounced the unwarranted vilification of Umahi and urged for diplomatic engagement instead of public discord, particularly encouraging Peter Obi to seek constructive dialogue with Umahi for insights into national development projects.
This statement follows Umahi’s accusation that Obi was inciting the South East populace against the Federal Government regarding the coastal highway project. Obi refuted these claims, highlighting his administration’s commitment to removing structures obstructing roads during his tenure as governor.
Ohanaeze reiterated its support for President Tinubu and Senator Umahi’s efforts in enhancing national infrastructure, especially applauding the allocation of a N2.75 billion compensation fund for affected property owners along the project’s Right-of-Way.
Addressing the long-standing neglect of critical infrastructure in the region, Ohanaeze urged stakeholders to prioritize collective advancement through constructive dialogue, emphasizing the importance of a united and prosperous nation.
Umahi recently announced the commencement of the FG’s payment of N2.75 billion in compensation to property owners affected by the necessary demolition for the coastal highway construction, spanning from channel 0 to channel 3.
