In a tragic incident in the Oko Oba area of Lagos State, a man named Taiwo Badejo allegedly stabbed his friend, known simply as Monday, to death over a debt of N2,500. According to reports, an argument between Badejo and Monday escalated into a physical fight, culminating in Monday being fatally stabbed by Badejo.
Residents of Egbatedo Street, where the incident occurred, narrated that efforts were made to intervene and pacify the two individuals, but the situation worsened, resulting in the fatal stabbing. It was revealed that Monday had lent Badejo the sum of N2,500, and when Monday demanded repayment, the dispute turned violent.
Describing the circumstances, one resident, Tope Ajise, lamented that Monday bled to death as a result of the stabbing, highlighting the trivial nature of the disagreement that led to the fatal altercation.
Another resident, Taofeek, characterized Badejo as someone without a steady source of income who, along with others in the area, engaged in idle activities. This observation underscores the prevalence of joblessness and its potential role in escalating conflicts within the community.
Subsequent to the incident, Badejo was apprehended by members of the Oodua People’s Congress and handed over to the police. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed Badejo’s arrest, stating that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Sadly, this incident echoes similar cases of violence among acquaintances in Lagos, including instances where disputes over trivial matters have resulted in fatalities. The recurrence of such incidents underscores the need for community awareness and preventive measures to curb violence and promote peaceful coexistence.
