A 30-year-old teacher at Landmark School Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, identified as Faith Nwonye, has been apprehended for allegedly assaulting an eight-year-old pupil to the point of inducing a coma.
Announcing this distressing incident to reporters in her office, the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, revealed that the school has been permanently shut down in response to the appalling event. Prof. Chuma-Udeh disclosed that she had summoned the school’s proprietor and the accused teacher to provide explanations regarding the brutal treatment meted out to the primary two pupil.
Following the meeting, the commissioner clarified that the school’s closure was not solely due to the grave incident but also because of its lack of legal authorization. She expressed deep regret over the situation, noting that the victim’s chance of survival, currently receiving medical attention in a hospital, stands at a mere 20%.
Emphasizing the severity of operating an unregistered school and inflicting harm on a child, Prof. Chuma-Udeh cautioned that such actions would face severe consequences. She stressed, “Running an unapproved school in Anambra is a criminal offense. Whether sanctioned or not, it is criminal to inflict violence upon a child.”
Asserting the state government’s stance against all forms of violence, particularly towards children and women, the commissioner assured that such acts did not align with the values of the administration, emphasizing the governor’s firm stance against such atrocities.
