Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reiterated his determination to continue contesting for Nigeria’s presidency as long as his health permits. Drawing inspiration from the perseverance of former American President Abraham Lincoln, who ran for office several times before clinching victory, Atiku expressed his unwavering commitment during an interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America in Abuja.
At 77 years old, Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 elections, remains undeterred despite previous electoral setbacks against former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu. With the next presidential election slated for 2027, where he would be 81, Atiku emphasized that age would not hinder his aspirations, stating he would continue contesting until his health allows.
Acknowledging the importance of collaboration and support from other parties for electoral success, Atiku emphasized the need for unity within the PDP. He disclosed his willingness to throw his weight behind the South-East’s candidacy, particularly Peter Obi, if the party decides to zone the presidential ticket accordingly. Atiku reiterated his commitment to abide by the party’s decision, emphasizing his support for the greater good of the PDP.
Regarding his recent meeting with Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Atiku clarified that it was a routine gathering among opposition party members aimed at fostering healthy democratic discourse. He hinted at the possibility of a merger among opposition parties to achieve common goals, emphasizing the potential for collaboration to advance Nigeria’s democratic principles and national interests.
