During Thursday’s session, the House of Representatives advanced a bill for a second reading, advocating for a return to Nigeria’s former national anthem. Julius Ihonvbere, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized the significance of patriotism and nationalism in his address on the bill’s general principles.
Joining the debate, Chinda, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, contested the adoption of the old anthem, labeling it a colonial relic unfit for a post-independence Nigeria. This stance found resonance with Ahmad Satomi, the representative of Jere Federal Constituency in Borno State.
On the other side, Ahmed Jaha, another lawmaker from Borno, voiced support for the bill, contending that the current anthem’s wording lacks substance in reflecting Nigeria’s national identity.
