Tragedy struck in the Ungwan Maigero Community of the Chikun Local Government Area in Kaduna State as 13-year-old Wisdom Hashimu took his own life. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, June 7, followed an alleged incident of torture by a soldier and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) in the area.
Wisdom was falsely accused of stealing N10,000 from a neighbor on June 1. The neighbor, identified as Hope, reportedly invited her boyfriend, Segun Samson, a serving soldier at Bodi Camp in Port-Harcourt, to address the situation. However, the money disappeared during Segun’s visit, leading Hope to involve her boyfriend, who then brought Wisdom and his brother to the Civilian JTF office.
Reports suggest that Wisdom, who was in the midst of his Junior Secondary School examination, was subjected to severe beating by a soldier and members of the civilian JTF. Despite receiving medical attention afterward, he succumbed to his injuries.
Wisdom’s father, Mr. Saul, expressed shock at the brutality inflicted upon his son, alleging that the Civilian JTF took the law into their own hands. He revealed that while Wisdom was mercilessly beaten, Hope’s younger brother, also implicated in the theft, was unharmed.
The family is demanding justice for their son’s ordeal, emphasizing the need for accountability and an end to extrajudicial actions. Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, Mansir Hassan, confirmed that an investigation is underway, assuring that those responsible will be brought to justice.
