Addressing attendees during the 2024 Democracy Day Lecture at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu highlighted the pivotal juncture in Nigeria’s democratic journey, stressing the importance of every citizen’s contribution irrespective of background. Reflecting on 25 years of democratic governance, he underscored the need for continuous commitment to democratic values, emphasizing that democracy is an ongoing process requiring perpetual nurturing and vigilant oversight.
Tinubu emphasized the need for collective action in building a nation where every voice is heard and every citizen is empowered to contribute to the common good. He commended the sacrifices of past generations in sustaining democracy, noting the resilience displayed in overcoming challenges. He called for a renewed sense of purpose and unity in shaping Nigeria’s future, urging active participation from all sectors of society.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, acknowledged the sacrifices made by democracy advocates and praised the unwavering commitment of Nigerians to democratic ideals. Former Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, echoed the sentiment, calling for politicians to prioritize the needs of the people and uphold democratic principles of good governance and fair play.
