In a significant ruling, the Delta State High Court in Asaba delivered a verdict on Tuesday, sentencing Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Nigeria Police Force to death for murder. Presided over by Justice C. D Diai, the court found Ebri guilty of killing Onyeka Ibeh, a phone dealer, in Asaba.
The tragic incident occurred on April 5, 2023, when Ibeh and his wife were driving from Ugbolu to Asaba and were stopped by a police team for a search. Despite complying and waiting patiently, they were left unattended for an extended period. Frustrated by the delay, they decided to continue their journey.
In a shocking turn of events, Inspector Ebri, evidently angered by the deceased’s decision to move on, opened fire at the vehicle, fatally striking Ibeh in the head. The senseless act sparked outrage among the youth in Asaba, leading to protests demanding justice.
The prosecution, represented by Director E.H Edema from the Ministry of Justice, described the judgement as a landmark decision, emphasizing that justice has been served not only to the deceased but also to society as a whole.
Ifeanyi Ibeh, the elder brother of the deceased who witnessed the verdict, expressed gratitude to the court for delivering justice to his family. The ruling serves as a testament to the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability, particularly within law enforcement agencies.
