The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared ex-Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, wanted over allegations of N80.2 billion fraud, as he failed to appear for trial, deriding the Nigerian justice system. This was disclosed by EFCC’s acting Zonal Director, Mr. Effa Okim, during a visit to the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Asaba, Delta State.
Despite repeated attempts to arrest him and his consistent absence from court, Bello remains at large, prompting the EFCC to declare him wanted, with the Nigerian Immigration placing him on a watchlist. When queried about the delay in apprehending Bello, Okim expressed frustration, attributing it to a systemic failure.
Okim lamented Bello’s evasion of justice, questioning the complicity of the system in shielding him. He criticized the lack of moral authority among Bello’s peers and urged for collective action to compel his appearance before the EFCC.
Highlighting the erosion of morality in the face of legality, Okim emphasized the need for societal condemnation of Bello’s actions and urged the media to unite in demanding his accountability. He stressed the need for Bello to submit himself to the EFCC for questioning, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law.
In response, the Chairman of NUJ Delta State Council, Churchill Oyowe, pledged the journalists’ support to the EFCC in its efforts to combat corruption and uphold justice.
