During the first three days of the Sallah holiday, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Zone 11 Command covering Osun, Ondo, and Oyo States, reported a total of 13 road accidents within its jurisdiction, resulting in nine fatalities and injuries to 78 individuals. The incidents involved 21 vehicles and 128 people, with an additional 41 individuals rescued without injuries.
The Acting Zonal Commanding Officer, Leye Adegboyega, disclosed these figures while reviewing operations for the Sallah period. The FRSC deployed a substantial force comprising 3,018 personnel, 57 patrol vehicles, five ambulances, and two heavy-duty tow trucks across major routes in the zone. The objective was to enhance visibility, curb speeding-related accidents, and ensure swift responses to distress calls.
A statement from the command emphasized the special operation’s mission to maintain traffic flow, minimize road traffic crashes (RTCs), provide timely rescue services, and promptly clear obstructions on critical corridors throughout Osun, Ondo, and Oyo States. Key routes under constant monitoring included the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, Ibadan-Ife Expressway, Ife-Ilesa Expressway, Ilesa-Ipetujesa-Akure Expressway, Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway, and Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway.
In the course of the operation’s initial phase, the FRSC reported the apprehension of 737 traffic offenders for 766 various traffic violations that could have precipitated accidents. They also conducted 219 public enlightenment activities across media outlets, motor parks, religious centers, and other public spaces to promote road safety awareness.
Adegboyega urged the public and road users to exercise responsibility while traveling, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in reducing road accidents and safeguarding lives and property.
