Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has allocated funds for the restoration of the old Lokoja water works, which were submerged during the 2022 flood disaster. This decision was announced by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Yahaya Farouk, during a press briefing in Lokoja on Tuesday.
Farouk detailed that the rehabilitation aims to provide water to parts of Lokoja while repairs at the Greater Lokoja Water Works, damaged in 2012 floods, continue. He assured residents of the state government’s proactive measures to replace submerged equipment at the Greater Lokoja facility, a task expected to span 12 months.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to resolving water scarcity, Farouk urged patience from residents, noting ongoing efforts to resolve the issue swiftly. “Contractors will resume work on the old Lokoja water works rehabilitation by Friday, following approval and funding by Governor Usman Ododo. We anticipate a prompt restoration of water supply to Lokoja metropolis,” he assured.
Farouk debunked rumors alleging the sale of the old Lokoja water works reservoir, attributing such misinformation to mischief-makers aiming to undermine government efforts. He also addressed recent vandalism at the Greater Lokoja Water Works, where suspects were apprehended for stealing armored cables, stressing the government’s resolve to prosecute those involved.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of community vigilance in protecting public infrastructure, citing Ayegunle Gbede community in Kogi East as a positive example. He praised their proactive role in safeguarding water facilities and encouraged similar community ownership across the state.
Regarding the Greater Lokoja Water Works project, Farouk disclosed that procurement is nearing completion, with plans advancing to restore the plant to full functionality. He applauded the collaboration between the government and journalists, highlighting its role in fostering development and governance in Kogi State.
