The Nigeria Police Force has initiated an investigation into five officers stationed at Zone 6 Police Headquarters in Cross River State following allegations of abduction and extortion amounting to N3 million from a victim. The officers, currently detained, are accused of perpetrating the act during a patrol along the Ikom-Calabar highway.
SP Nelson Okpabi, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, conveyed on Tuesday that the officers are facing scrutiny for alleged involvement in corrupt practices and unprofessional behavior. A statement released by SP Okpabi highlighted the displeasure of AIG Jonathan Towuru, Assistant Inspector-General of Police at Zone 6 in Calabar, towards the reported misconduct.
“The AIG has directed a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain the veracity of the claims, aiming to inform appropriate disciplinary action,” stated SP Okpabi. He reminded that the incident involved officers patrolling the Ikom-Calabar highway and assured that the five officers implicated have been placed under custody as investigations commence.
Additionally, SP Okpabi emphasized the commitment of AIG Jonathan Towuru to ensure that necessary disciplinary measures are implemented against those found culpable. This is intended not only to address the specific incident but also to deter similar misconduct among other officers.
