During a plenary session on Thursday, the House of Representatives announced a significant gesture to alleviate hunger in Nigeria by pledging to donate 50% of their salaries for a six-month period. The session, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, saw Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu amend the motion, passionately advocating for his colleagues to support this initiative.
“In light of the ongoing challenges faced by our country, I urge us all to consider sacrificing 50% of our salaries for the next six months,” Deputy Speaker Kalu proposed, addressing the chamber. “Our current monthly salary is N600,000. I propose that each of us contributes N300,000 monthly for the next six months.”
If implemented, this decision would result in the House of Representatives collectively contributing N108 million each month to the Federal Government, amounting to N648 million over the designated six-month period.
The move underscores the lawmakers’ commitment to addressing the widespread hunger crisis in Nigeria, reflecting a collective effort to support government efforts in tackling national challenges beyond immediate governmental actions.
