The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has apprehended Hashiru Baku, identified as the mastermind behind the murder of Brigadier General Harold Udokwere. Udokwere, the National Chairman of Retired Members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, was tragically killed during a robbery at his residence on June 22, 2024, where his gun and personal belongings were taken.
Earlier, Ibrahim Rabiu, Nafiu Jamil, Aliyu Abdullahi, and Mohammed Nuhu had been arrested and paraded in connection with the crime on June 24, 2024. Addressing journalists, FCT Commissioner of Police Bennett Igweh announced Baku’s capture in Kano State as he attempted to flee the country. Igweh revealed that Baku had escaped from the Kuje Correctional Centre previously.
Igweh emphasized Baku’s role as the organizer behind Udokwere’s murder and robbery. Alongside Baku’s arrest, the police recovered the general’s stolen gun, his wristwatch, and jewelry belonging to his wife. Additionally, drugs were found in Baku’s residence, indicating his involvement in substance abuse.
The police commissioner condemned Baku’s continued criminal activities following his prison escape, noting that instead of reforming, Baku had escalated his criminal actions. Igweh highlighted the seriousness of the charges against Baku and the evidence recovered from the crime scene and Baku’s residence.
The arrest underscores the police’s efforts to bring justice to the late Brigadier General Udokwere’s family and to combat organized crime in the region.
