In response to rising tensions over Nigeria’s economic challenges, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), through its President Joe Ajaero, has called on President Bola Tinubu to engage with protest leaders and address the pressing issues faced by Nigerians.
Ajaero emphasized the severe economic conditions affecting millions of Nigerians, stating that many families are struggling to afford even one meal a day, with some resorting to extreme measures like scavenging for food. He underscored the urgency for government intervention in light of staggering statistics: approximately 133 million Nigerians living below the extreme poverty line, and reports indicating that 32 million Nigerians faced acute hunger in the first three quarters of 2024.
The NLC President rejected claims that the planned protests are politically motivated, asserting that such dismissals undermine the genuine suffering experienced by Nigerians daily. He defended citizens’ rights to express grievances during difficult times, citing previous NLC-led protests against fuel price hikes and increased electricity tariffs.
Calling for a diplomatic approach from the government, Ajaero urged dialogue (“jaw jaw”) over conflict (“war war”), emphasizing the need for understanding and cooperation to address the country’s challenges. He used a proverbial expression to highlight the importance of timely action in resolving issues before they escalate further.
In essence, the NLC’s statement underscores the critical need for government responsiveness to the plight of Nigerians, urging proactive engagement and meaningful dialogue to alleviate economic hardships and ensure social stability.
