Fifteen lawmakers, operating under the banner of The Economy Rescue Group, have called for the resignation of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The group accuses Kyari of mismanagement, which they claim has hindered President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a press release issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the group’s leader, Esosa Iyawe, who represents Oredo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, stated that Kyari should be suspended while the House of Representatives’ joint Committee on Petroleum (Downstream and Midstream) conducts a forensic investigation into the NNPCL and related sectors.
The lawmakers allege that Kyari and his management team are undermining Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. They argue that Kyari’s removal is necessary to prevent any potential sabotage during the investigation.
The group supports the House’s forensic probe into issues such as the role of middlemen in trading, the indiscriminate issuance of licenses, the lack of laboratories for testing adulterated products, and the influx of such products into the country. They have urged President Tinubu to act decisively by suspending Kyari and other top officials at NNPCL until the investigation is complete.
The statement reads: “We, the 15 concerned lawmakers, unequivocally state that the problems plaguing the oil and gas sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration are largely due to failures and mismanagement by the NNPCL under Kyari’s leadership. To address these issues, we believe that Kyari and his team should resign immediately.”
