Telecom giant MTN has shut down all its stores and service centers across Nigeria following widespread outrage from subscribers over recent SIM blockages. The closures come after the network provider barred lines on Sunday due to mismatches between National Identification Numbers and SIM registrations.
The controversy erupted after a viral video showed a mob vandalizing an MTN office in FESTAC Town, Lagos State. The video captured angry subscribers destroying barricades and the telecommunications company’s property in response to the SIM blocking issue.
In reaction, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin stated on X.com that the DPO of FESTAC and his team had successfully restored order at the scene. Hundeyin urged against such violent reactions.
On Tuesday, MTN announced that it would be closing all its shops nationwide for the day. “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” read a statement on X.
