On Saturday, gunmen suspected to be armed bandits ambushed a convoy of Nigerian Army troops in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers.
The incident was confirmed on Sunday by the sole administrator of the council, Umar Balle, during a phone conversation with our correspondent. Balle, who was also part of the convoy, narrowly escaped the attack.
According to Balle, four soldiers lost their lives, while seven others sustained gunshot wounds. The attackers also set fire to the troops’ vehicle. The injured soldiers were initially treated at Gudu General Hospital before being transferred to the Usmanu Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital in Sokoto on Sunday.
Yahya Gudu, the member representing Gudu in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, also confirmed the attack. He noted that the assailants ambushed the soldiers along the Kukurau-Bangi road, killing four and injuring two others. The gunmen also destroyed two patrol vehicles during the assault.
In response to the incident, additional security personnel have been deployed to the area to bolster security.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the state government were unsuccessful, as the special adviser on security matters to the Sokoto State Governor, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), was unavailable for comment at the time of filing this report.
