The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 16 people have died in a multiple-vehicle accident at the Ojoo-Iwo Road axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The incident occurred on Tuesday and involved a Mack truck and three other vehicles.
Mr. Mayowa Odewo, spokesperson for the FRSC Oyo State Sector Command, informed the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan that 17 other individuals sustained various injuries in the crash. Among the 35 people involved were 14 male adults, 10 female adults, six female children, and five male children. Two people escaped without injury.
Odewo explained that the accident was caused by a brake failure in a Mack truck with the registration number AKM 548 ZY. The other vehicles involved included a Nissan commercial bus (MUB 20 LG), a Nissan Micra taxi (BDJ 520 YC), and a private Honda Accord SUV (KRD 707 ER).
The injured victims were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while the corpses were handed over to the police. “The accident vehicles have been taken to Irepodun Police Station, along Agbowo-Ojoo Road, by the police,” Odewo stated.
Unfortunately, none of the victims were protected by seat belts or other defensive gadgets. Mr. Odewo urged drivers to exercise more caution and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
