Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents have unleashed terror in Mafa village, located in the Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State. The attackers looted and set ablaze shops and houses in the village during the assault, which took place around 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Yobe State Police Command spokesman, Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the attack to the News Agency of Nigeria in Damaturu on Monday. “We are still working to determine the exact number of lives lost in this tragic incident,” Abdulkarim stated. The attack was reported by local residents Babagana Goni and Bako Ibrahim to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Station.
According to Abdulkarim, the assailants, believed to be Boko Haram terrorists, arrived on more than 50 motorcycles, armed with rifles and RPGs. They wreaked havoc in Mafa ward, setting numerous shops and houses ablaze and leaving many dead. However, the exact casualty count has not yet been confirmed.
In addition to the destruction, the gunmen left behind fliers with Arabic inscriptions. This attack comes just days after terrorists targeted a private school in the neighboring town of Geidam, where they killed three students and injured another.
