Lt.-Gen. Toareed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has emphasized the critical role of digital technology in addressing Nigeria’s emerging security threats. Speaking at a seminar organized for officers and soldiers of the 3 Division, Nigerian Army, in Rukuba, near Jos, Lagbaja highlighted how advanced technologies are reshaping military operations.
The seminar, titled “Digital Transformation and Smart Soldier Concept,” was part of the Nigerian Army’s initiative to integrate modern technology into its operations. Represented by Maj.-Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar, General Officer Commanding the 3 Division and Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Lagbaja pointed out that the drive towards digital transformation is crucial in adapting to the evolving security landscape.
“This seminar is timely as the battlefield is rapidly changing due to technological advancements,” Lagbaja stated. “The integration of digital technologies in military operations is not optional but essential.”
The COAS announced that the Nigerian Army would soon equip its personnel with advanced tools such as smart devices and wearable technology to enhance situational awareness, communication, and decision-making in combat. He explained that the concept of the “smart soldier” involves providing troops with the skills and equipment necessary to thrive in a digital environment.
Lagbaja stressed that the ongoing transformation of the Nigerian Army goes beyond adopting new technologies. It also involves fostering a culture of innovation and adaptability in response to the nation’s complex security challenges.
“The smart soldier embodies military efficiency, with enhanced situational awareness, real-time information sharing, and advanced communication systems,” he said. “Our transformation efforts depend on our troops’ ability to integrate new technologies while staying agile and prepared for any challenge.”
Earlier in the seminar, Maj.-Gen. Zakari Ibrahim, Chief of Transformation and Innovation for the Nigerian Army, spoke about the importance of sensitizing personnel to the integration of digital technology in military operations. Represented by his Deputy, Maj.-Gen. Adewale Adetoba, Ibrahim explained that this initiative aligns with global best practices in military operations.
“This exercise will enhance the capacity of our troops to make informed decisions and effectively manage resources, ensuring greater operational effectiveness,” Ibrahim noted. He added that the evolving nature of military operations demands the use of technology, particularly data analysis, to stay ahead of emerging threats.
As the Nigerian Army continues to modernize its operations, digital transformation remains a key strategy for improving operational efficiency and ensuring national security.
