Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially launched the revitalisation of Enugu United Palm Products Limited (EUPPL), a significant step in transforming the state’s agricultural industry. The event, held at Ibite-Olo in Ezeagu Local Government Area, follows a landmark N100 billion partnership between the Enugu State Government and Pragmatic Palms Limited, signed in May.
During Thursday’s inauguration, which also included the groundbreaking for staff quarters at the plantation, Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the people of Enugu for supporting his vision to convert the state’s dormant assets into productive ventures.
“This event represents the triumph of vision over doubt,” said Mbah. “When we initially announced this N100bn investment, many were skeptical. But today’s groundbreaking is proof that we are closer to transforming Enugu into a leading hub for investment, industry, and tourism.”
Mbah reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting Pragmatic Palms Limited (PPL) in this transformative effort. The Managing Director of PPL, Prof. George Nwangwu, outlined a five-year plan aimed at making EUPPL a key player in Nigeria’s oil palm industry across upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors. With 40% of the 6,700 hectares already planted, PPL intends to expand cultivation to 20,000 hectares in the next five years. The plan also includes building world-class oil mills, increasing production, and expanding refining capabilities.
Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Industry, Adaora Chukwu, highlighted that EUPPL, established in 1970, had suffered from mismanagement and outdated equipment. However, the new joint venture between the state and PPL, where the government provides land and PPL finances 60% of the project, promises economic growth, job creation, and technological development.
The host communities expressed their appreciation for the project, with local leader Johnmary Anagolu donating N50 million to further support infrastructure in the area.
