A 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, was apprehended by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of synthetic cannabis known as “Canadian Loud” into Nigeria. Munju, who arrived on a KLM flight from Canada on October 3, 2024, was arrested during passenger clearance at the airport.
According to the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Munju was found with 74 parcels of the illegal substance weighing 35.20 kilograms hidden in two of her three bags. This was her first time in Nigeria. During interrogation, Munju admitted she had been recruited to traffic the drugs through an online platform and was promised 10,000 Canadian dollars for successful delivery in Lagos. She said she accepted the offer to pay for her ongoing Master’s degree program in Canada.
In a related development, NDLEA agents, in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service, intercepted a massive drug haul worth over N9 billion at Port Harcourt Ports in Rivers State. The seizure included 13.3 million opioid pills, such as Tramadol and Carisoprodol, as well as over 338,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup in containers arriving from India.
Further investigations at the Tin Can Seaport in Lagos uncovered 100 parcels of “Canadian Loud” cannabis weighing 50kg. These were hidden in a container alongside imported vehicles from Canada. The NDLEA tracked the consignment to a warehouse in Ikorodu, where the drugs were found concealed in a Toyota Sienna. A suspect, Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim, was arrested in connection with the seizure.
Additional arrests were made in Taraba State, where NDLEA officers intercepted a commercial bus carrying 80 blocks of cannabis hidden in bags of garri. Two suspects, Pako Thomas and Emmanuel Anyigor, were taken into custody, along with another suspect, Chibuzor Okafor, who was arrested with cannabis in Wukari.
The NDLEA also confiscated 700 liters of “skuchies”—a cocktail of illicit drugs mixed with local Chapman—from a group of suspects. Three men, Ezekiel Akpele, Elijah Michael, and Goddard John, were arrested in connection with the illicit brew.
