The Senate has declared its intention to issue warrants of arrest for officials from several key government agencies who have repeatedly ignored invitations to appear before lawmakers. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen (LP, Edo South), is targeting officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, Union Homes Savings and Loans Plc, and other agencies.
During Wednesday’s plenary session, Senator Imasuen informed the Senate of his plan to issue the arrest warrants, citing the agencies’ persistent refusal to honor their summons. These agencies also include the Federal Ministry of Works, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Sally Best Properties Limited, and the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation (HoCSF).
Quoting from Senate Rule Book Order 42, Imasuen explained the decision to pursue arrest warrants as a means of compelling the agencies to comply. “Due to the consistent refusal of officers from some Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to attend our hearings, I am preparing to issue a warrant of arrest to ensure these officials appear before the Senate Committee,” Imasuen stated.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio supported the move, affirming Senator Imasuen’s request. “You have informed us of your intention to use the committee’s powers to issue the necessary warrants to compel their attendance, and your point of order is sustained,” Akpabio concluded.
This decision follows mounting frustration over the absence of agency representatives at key Senate hearings, with lawmakers insisting that the move is essential to maintaining accountability and transparency across government institutions.
