Former Kano State lawmaker and member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, has regained his freedom after completing a five-year prison sentence. Lawan was convicted for demanding and accepting a $500,000 bribe from Nigerian billionaire oil magnate Femi Otedola in 2012.
Lawan, who served as the chairman of the House ad-hoc committee investigating fuel subsidy fraud, was found guilty of soliciting a total bribe of $3 million from Otedola during the course of the investigation.
His conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court on January 26, 2024, sealing his fate and leading to his imprisonment.
