The Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius A. Kaigama, has called on the Federal Government to implement policies that deliver real socio-economic benefits to Nigerians, especially as the country battles rising poverty, insecurity, and a crumbling infrastructure.
Speaking at the 5th Annual General Assembly of the Archdiocese of Abuja, Archbishop Kaigama urged political leaders, particularly Catholics in power, to translate their faith into impactful actions that alleviate the suffering of the masses.
“We must engage in actions that bring genuine development,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the widening gap between the elite and the poor.
The Archbishop further stressed the need for Catholics in business and politics to actively contribute to the Church’s mission of societal transformation, urging the faithful to advocate for policies that prioritize the most vulnerable populations.
Meanwhile, the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, His Grace, Most Rev. Michael Crotty, commended the Archdiocese for hosting the Assembly.
He described the event as a platform for deep reflection and unity in faith, noting its importance in addressing societal challenges such as neo-paganism and economic instability.
The Nuncio highlighted the Church’s role as a “beacon of hope,” particularly for the marginalized, and lauded Archbishop Kaigama’s visionary leadership over the past five years.
He prayed for the Assembly’s success, urging members to collaborate in advancing the Gospel across Abuja and beyond.
On his part, Chairman of the Assembly, Mr. Patrick O. Ojeka, praised the Archdiocesan leadership for its innovative projects, including the establishment of 80 pastoral areas and ambitious 5-year plans.
However, he called for attention to critical issues such as improving catechesis, empowering youth groups, and revitalizing fundraising efforts during Harvest Thanksgiving.
As the Assembly deliberates on the future, Mr. Ojeka underscored the need for investments in agriculture, real estate, and education to secure the Church’s mission and improve members’ welfare.
He expressed optimism that the Assembly would yield fruitful outcomes, culminating in the Archdiocese’s dedication to Our Lady.
The event marks a significant milestone for the Archdiocese, blending spiritual reflection with actionable strategies for faith and societal growth.
