According to the police, Ibuku confessed to the crime, citing mockery from friends who ridiculed her over her baby being fatherless. The infant’s lifeless body was recovered from the Aviara community river, with investigations confirming that Ibuku committed the act on November 31, 2024.
Commissioner Olufemi detailed the command’s efforts in combating crime since his appointment in February 2024. In the past month alone, over 30 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from robbery and kidnapping to cultism and murder. A total of 150 arms, including 32 AK-47 rifles, were also recovered.
One highlighted operation occurred on November 27, 2024, when the police responded to a kidnapping on DLA Road, Asaba. The suspects, using a Toyota Camry, abducted two individuals and stole another vehicle. However, the command’s Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad intercepted the suspects on the Asaba-Benin Expressway. The victims were released, and the suspects abandoned their vehicle, which contained an AK-47 rifle, two pump-action guns, and ammunition.
In another operation on December 2, 2024, a raid behind Anioma Market in Asaba led to the arrest of ten robbery suspects linked to crimes across several communities.
The commissioner also shared details of a chilling case involving one Destiny Lawrence, who confessed to working with a native doctor named Jonah to kidnap and murder a young boy for N30,000. The victim was lured to an uncompleted building, where Jonah allegedly killed him.
Overall, the police command reported 678 arrests and significant arms recoveries during the review period. Commissioner Olufemi emphasized the need for public cooperation in providing actionable intelligence to enhance security in the state.
