The reforms have faced significant backlash, particularly from Northern stakeholders, prompting President Tinubu to urge calm and direct the AGF to engage with the National Assembly to resolve contentious issues.
In response, the Senate formed a special committee chaired by Senator Abba Moro to collaborate with the AGF on fine-tuning the bills. However, initial progress was delayed due to adjustments in the committee’s membership and ongoing Senate caucus meetings.
A source from the Ministry of Justice confirmed the meeting’s scheduling. “The AGF will be at the National Assembly tomorrow, December 19, for the tax reform bill meeting,” the official disclosed under anonymity.
Senator Moro also confirmed that both the AGF and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman Zacch Adedeji had been invited to participate.
The committee, formed two weeks ago, includes prominent senators such as Adamu Aliero, Orji Uzor Kalu, Seriake Dickson, and Titus Zam. However, Kaka Shehu, SAN (APC, Borno Central), has since declined his membership.
The outcome of this meeting will likely determine the future trajectory of the Tax Reform Bills and their reception across Nigeria, as the Senate works to address regional concerns and ensure balanced fiscal policies.
