The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has launched a free train ride initiative targeting approximately 340,000 passengers during the Yuletide season. This program, part of the Federal Government’s palliative measures, aims to provide cost-free and seamless travel for Nigerians across major railway routes during the holidays.
Speaking at Kubwa Station on Friday, the Acting Managing Director of the NRC, Ben Iluanosi, confirmed the initiative’s successful launch. “We will enforce the free train ride. Glory be to God, it was successful today. Every passenger, both ticketed and unticketed, was profiled and boarded,” he stated.
The free rides will operate daily across key routes, including Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, Port Harcourt-Aba, Lagos Mass Transit, and Warri-Itape. Iluanosi disclosed that an average of 20,000 passengers would benefit daily, with the service expected to run until January 4 or 5, 2024.
To address concerns about ticketing, crowd control, and security, Iluanosi encouraged early travel planning and online booking. “Tickets for tomorrow are still available on the portal. Let’s enjoy this initiative in an orderly manner,” he appealed.
The NRC has implemented measures to prevent ticket hoarding and abuse of the free service. Passengers are restricted to purchasing a maximum of two tickets per booking. Security has also been reinforced at train stations to maintain orderliness and ensure smooth operations.
Regarding technical challenges with the e-ticketing system, Iluanosi acknowledged improvements. “We’ve made the e-ticketing solution faster. If you experience booking issues, please contact our support centre, and the hotline numbers are on the portal,” he said.
With enhanced security and a streamlined ticketing process, the NRC is optimistic that the initiative will provide much-needed relief to travelers during the holiday season. Further updates on the program will be announced in January.
