President Bola Tinubu has attributed the recent fatal stampedes in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja to the poor planning and execution by event organisers. Speaking during his first Presidential Media Chat on Monday in Lagos, Tinubu described the incidents as grave errors that could have been avoided.
“I see this as a very grave error on the part of the organisers,” the President stated.
The tragic stampedes, which occurred during the distribution of palliatives to less privileged citizens, resulted in over 60 fatalities. Among them, 10 deaths, including four children, were confirmed by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command during an event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday.
Offering condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, Tinubu expressed disappointment at the handling of the events.
“Condolences to those who lost a family member. It is good to give, but it must be done with discipline and proper organisation,” he said.
Drawing from his personal experience, Tinubu shared, “I’ve been giving to the less privileged at Bourdillon for the past 25 years. We’ve never experienced a stampede. If you know you don’t have enough to give, do not publicise it.”
The President’s remarks underscore the need for stricter guidelines and planning in charitable events to prevent further loss of lives, especially during humanitarian efforts aimed at assisting vulnerable populations.
