The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Daniel Onyejekwe, for allegedly stabbing his neighbour, identified as Christian, to death during a quarrel over rice.
The incident occurred on New Year’s Day in the Ogwanja area of Sapele, Delta State, after an argument escalated into a fatal confrontation.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest on Thursday. “It is confirmed, and the suspect is in custody. The two were fighting and injured themselves badly. Unfortunately, one, Christian, died,” Edafe stated.
According to eyewitnesses, the dispute began while rice was being distributed along Boyo Road in Ogwanja. The altercation turned physical when Onyejekwe and Christian started arguing over their share.
An eyewitness, speaking anonymously, recounted, “Christian and Daniel started dragging the rice, and during the fight, Daniel picked a bottle and stabbed Christian multiple times. The vigilante rushed him to the hospital, but he was confirmed dead on arrival.”
The deceased’s body has been deposited at a mortuary, and the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
SP Edafe assured the public that the suspect would face prosecution after the investigation is completed. The tragic incident has raised concerns about conflict resolution and community tensions in the area.
