The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has vowed a firm and decisive response to any assault on personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasizing that such acts are criminal and an affront to the institution as a whole.
Speaking during a visit to the Enugu State Police Command on Friday, Egbetokun stressed the importance of protecting officers and maintaining the integrity of the force. He declared 2025 a year of “zero tolerance” for attacks on police officers, warning that any act of violence or assault against officers would be met with appropriate and collective responses.
“We will not tolerate any assault on our police officers, not to talk of killing,” the IGP stated. “An assault on a policeman is an assault on the entire institution, and we will not take it lightly. Justice must always be served.”
Egbetokun reassured officers that their welfare remains a top priority, with ongoing collaborations between the police force and the federal government to improve conditions. He also highlighted the importance of professionalism, ethical conduct, and modern training as key pillars for achieving the force’s vision for 2025.
The IGP commended the Enugu State Police Command for its diligence and professionalism, while acknowledging concerns about a few rogue officers tarnishing the institution’s reputation. He urged officers to remain steadfast in their duties, vowing to support the command with resources to combat crime effectively.
On welfare matters, Egbetokun dismissed misinformation circulating online, including claims that officers’ needs are neglected. “No IG will neglect the welfare of his officers,” he said, reassuring personnel of forthcoming initiatives aimed at improving their well-being.
Egbetokun also cited the force’s impartial handling of recent incidents, such as the alleged assault of a Bolt driver by a federal lawmaker, as proof of its commitment to justice.
In his closing remarks, the IGP reiterated his determination to maintain professionalism, stamp out criminal elements, and uphold the dignity of the Nigeria Police Force in 2025.
