The Lagos State High Court in Tafawa Balewa Square has adjourned the trial of Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) driver Andrew Ominikoron, accused of raping and murdering 22-year-old fashion designer Oluwabamise Ayanwole, to March 3, 2025. The adjournment was prompted by the continued absence of the defense counsel, Abayomi Omotubora.
Justice Sherifat Sonaike had initially scheduled the case for February 10, 2025, but was forced to reschedule after Omotubora failed to appear. This marks the second time his absence has delayed proceedings, following a previous adjournment on November 29, 2024, due to claims of ill health.
Ominikoron, who was arraigned in March 2022, faces four counts of conspiracy, rape, and murder. Prosecutors allege that on February 26, 2022, he conspired with others still at large to sexually assault and kill Ayanwole. The victim was reportedly thrown out of a moving BRT bus along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway and Carter Bridge.
Despite the severity of the charges, Ominikoron has pleaded not guilty. The prosecution maintains that the alleged crimes violate Sections 411, 223, 260, and 165 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.
As the trial nears its conclusion, all eyes will be on the court’s next sitting in March, where the final written addresses are expected to be adopted before a judgment is delivered.
