June 12 is a date that carries layers of meaning. For some, it’s a day written in the stars — the Gemini season, symbolizing duality, brotherhood, and resilience, inspired by the Greek myth of Castor and Pollux. For Nigerians, however, June 12 resonates with even deeper significance: it is Democracy Day, a national reflection on our past, present, and aspirations for the future.

Since the return to civilian rule in 1999, Nigeria’s democratic journey has been marked by both progress and pitfalls. We’ve seen moments of triumph and courage, yet many citizens today are burdened by economic hardship, rising insecurity, and political disillusionment. Still, within the noise, there are bright beacons — proof that hope lives on.

Look at Victor Osimhen, whose goals have brought pride to millions, or Tunde Onakoya, the visionary behind chess initiatives in disadvantaged communities, turning slums into sanctuaries of learning and opportunity. Our musicians and filmmakers continue to break barriers globally, earning Grammy wins and global acclaim that remind the world of Nigeria’s boundless potential.

When Politicians Play, the People Pay
Unfortunately, not all who hold influence are using it wisely. Theatrics, distractions, and disregard for the rule of law have become too common in our political landscape. And when the rule of law is undermined, no nation can thrive. This isn’t just a warning — it’s a crisis. For those who understand the weight of this, stay tuned for what comes next.

What Nigerians Truly Want
As a member of the Nigerian diaspora, and a voice among millions of hopeful youths, I can say this with confidence: we’re not asking for miracles. We want progress real, measurable progress. A Nigeria that works. A country that empowers its people, not punishes them.

Here’s what that looks like:

  1. Education That Prepares for the Real World
We need a complete overhaul of our education system. Schools must emphasize practical skills — vocational training, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and financial education. Our youth don’t just need certificates; they need skills that pay.
  2. Startup Support for Young Entrepreneurs
Nigerian youths have brilliant ideas but face barriers like lack of capital and mentorship. The government should provide microgrants, create startup hubs, and offer tax breaks for youth-led ventures. Ideas don’t grow in the dark they need light, support, and structure.
  3. Reliable Digital Infrastructure
The internet is the new oil. By investing in affordable internet access especially in schools and rural communities — and supporting tech education through bootcamps and digital farms, we can unlock the future. A connected Nigeria is a competitive Nigeria.

A Word to Our Celebrities and Leaders
To our entertainers and public figures: the youth are watching. The lavish lifestyles and social media displays may entertain, but the time has come for more than spectacle. Be the example we never had show that influence can be used for real change.

To our politicians: Nigerians are not pawns. They are citizens who deserve dignity, opportunity, and fairness. Enough of the politics of division and despair. It’s time to serve, not rule.

To the President: The Nation Is Watching
Mr. President, we look to you not as a miracle worker, but as a leader with the power to restore trust and rebuild systems. We are not lazy or incapable. What we lack is fairness, opportunity, and leadership that sees beyond the elite.

You will be held accountable respectfully but persistently. And when you succeed, you will be celebrated.

The Future Is Unwritten
May God guide our leaders. May He bless our people. The future of Nigeria is a blank page and we, the citizens, hold the pen. Let’s write a chapter of pride, purpose, and promise.
