The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, held its 14th Annual Nurses Quiz Competition on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
Organized by the Nursing Services Department, the event which took place at the MRC Auditorium brought together nurses from various departments to test their professional knowledge, promote continuous learning, and foster healthy intellectual rivalry.
According to the organizers, this year’s edition featured contestants from eight departments, which included, Critical Care Unit, Emergency Unit, Orthopaedics Department, Burns & Trauma Unit, LASUTH Annex (Gbagada), Community and Primary Health Department, Paediatrics Department, Behavioral Medicine Department, and the Medicine Department. Questions spanned key areas such as Anatomy, Nutrition, Nursing, Nursing Practice, and General Knowledge.
Kicking the competition open, the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Adebola Aina, warmly welcomed guests and contestants. She stressed the importance of continuous self-development, urging nurses to regularly refresh their knowledge and stay updated with new trends, even from home. She wished all participants success and expressed gratitude to everyone in attendance.
In the same vein, the Chief Medical Director, Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, in his remarks commended the department for sustaining the quiz for 14 consecutive years, noting that it has sharpened the knowledge of both participants and the audience. He reiterated management’s commitment to providing nurses with a conducive work environment, citing the provision of ultramodern buildings and enhanced security measures, including a newly trained security squad. The CMD also announced his cash prizes for the top three positions.
Representing the Director of Clinical Services and Training, Professor Adebowale O. Adekoya, Dr. Bamidele Ayodele described the competition as a celebration of dedication, passion, and excellence. He highlighted the demanding nature of nursing and praised the event for showcasing not just knowledge, but expertise. He commended all participants, organizers, and judges, wishing the contestants the best of luck.
After several keenly contested rounds that kept the audience engaged, Senior Nursing Officer, Toyosi Akinbami, from the Critical Care Unit, emerged as the overall winner. Nursing Officer 2, Akoje Stephen, from the Emergency Unit, secured second place, while Senior Nursing Officer, Oyayode Temitayo, also from the Critical Care Unit, claimed third place.
The winners received their cash prizes from the CMD, along with additional gifts from the Nursing Services Department in recognition of their outstanding performance. The award presentations were met with loud cheers, rounding off another memorable edition of this long-standing LASUTH tradition.
