The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has flagged off the construction of a 7-kilometre bypass road with four-span bridges linking Tunga Madaki and eight other settlements near the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Wike said the road project is one of President Bola Tinubu’s promises to the residents of Tunga Madaki, revealing that the road will link about nine other communities.
The minister said: “One of the things that the communities asked for is that they have to be connected, they have to be linked up with roads.
“It is quite unfair that they are releasing their land for a second runway, yet they have no access to even go to the airport? It does not make sense.
“Today, the 29th of September 2025, we are here to the glory of God and to fulfil the promise made by Mr President to the people of Tunga Madaki settlement.
This is the essence of the whole thing about the Renewed Hope Agenda. This road is not less than seven kilometres long with four-span bridges.”
The FCT Minister said the contractor has assured that the road would be ready for the 3rd anniversary of President Tinubu in 2026.
Wike, in his usual controversial act, urged Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) residents to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Christopher Maikalangu, at the 2026 Abuja Area Council election.
Maikalangu is the current Chairman of AMAC, and he recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) to the APC and is seeking re-election for a second term in office.
While canvassing for votes for the APC candidate, Wike said, “Let me also say, my dear people, one good turn deserves another. When you do for me, I do for you. When you fall for me, I fall for you. When you listen to me, I listen to you. If you push me, I push you. If you quack me, I’ll quack you.
“Now that INEC has said area councils can go and campaign. Now that INEC has said they can go and campaign officially, you all know where we’re heading.
“So, my dear people of Tunga Madaki, I have handed over Mailakangu to you. So that, when the election is held in February, by June, Mr President will be here to inaugurate this road, and then we will all dance, and dance, and then Mr Maikalangu will come and do the needful after the election in February 2026.
Earlier speaking, FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, observed that by providing an alternative access route that bypasses the airport’s second runway, the project would significantly ease traffic along Bill Clinton Drive, enhance security and convenience for airport users, and open up Tunga Madaki and adjoining settlements to socio-economic opportunities.
According to her, more importantly, the inclusion of a 4-span bridge demonstrates the administration’s determination to ensure resilience and durability in our infrastructure, while also guaranteeing seamless connectivity for motorists and residents.
