The Minister of Labour and Employment, Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has called on the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to collaborate with the government to ensure a smooth academic session in 2024 and beyond. The minister made this appeal during a round table discussion between the federal government and ASUU.
In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Labour, Olajide Oshundun, Minister Onyejeocha expressed a desire to extend the role of the ministry beyond mediating disputes during strikes, aiming for proactive problem-solving to prevent such actions. She emphasized the importance of being part of the process to avert disruptions and advocated for collaboration between the government and ASUU.
The minister urged the leadership of ASUU, led by its President, Comrade Emmanuel Osodeke, to share all the union’s concerns with the ministry, believing that with mutual understanding, both parties can work together for the benefit of the country. She invited open dialogue and complete transparency to address issues comprehensively and align with the national agenda.
“I crave your indulgence to allow the ministry to know all the issues you think we should know,” she stated. “I want us to be on the same page, from item one to the last, for the sake of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Onyejeocha emphasized the ministry’s proactive role, stating that it should not be reactive but actively involved in addressing issues before they escalate. She highlighted her background as a product of the university system and stressed the importance of collaboration to achieve the shared goal of a renewed hope agenda.
The minister underscored the critical role of education in the nation’s future, calling for unity and shared direction. She expressed confidence in the possibility of moving in the same direction to ensure a vibrant and flourishing educational landscape.
