At least 10 people are feared dead, and 15 others have been hospitalized following an explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, affected various areas, including the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and residential neighborhoods like Ologuneru, Apete, New Garage, Bashorun, Akobo, Sango, and Eleyele.
The explosion took place at Adeyi Avenue, Bodija Estate, and resulted in significant damage to buildings in the vicinity. As rescue efforts unfolded, it was reported that at least 10 bodies were recovered, with the possibility of more people still trapped under the rubble.
The cause of the blast remains unconfirmed, with conflicting reports from residents suggesting it might have been caused by earth movement or an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Thick smoke filled the air, leading to the hospitalization of victims in various medical facilities.
Security personnel, including the police, Western Security Network (Amotekun), and local vigilantes, took control of the affected areas, with major roads deserted as residents stayed indoors. The authorities are still investigating the incident, and there is no definitive information on casualties or the extent of the damage.
The Oyo State Government, through the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the explosion and assured citizens that the government is in control of the situation. Governor Seyi Makinde has deployed security service chiefs and fire service operatives to manage the aftermath of the explosion.
The police also acknowledged the incident, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the explosion. In the wake of the tragedy, residents are urged to remain calm while awaiting further updates from security agencies and the government.
