The Federal Government has affirmed its commitment to fulfilling agreements with trade unions in Nigeria to maintain a peaceful industrial environment. Minister of Labour and Employment, Barr Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, conveyed this commitment during separate meetings with the leaderships of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and Congress of University Academics (CONUA) in Abuja.
The Minister assured the unions that the government is actively working to fulfill agreements and maintain open communication with major trade unions. She emphasized the importance of preventing future strikes, fostering positive labour relations, and ensuring a friendly working environment for all employees.
Addressing the TUC, Onyejeocha stated, “I am here specifically to reassure you that we have not forgotten about the agreements between the government and trade unions.” She acknowledged the initiation of payments related to the N35,000 wage award and affirmed that the outstanding amounts would be paid soon.
The government also expressed its commitment to addressing issues related to a new national minimum wage. The Minister commended the TUC for its faith in the government and assured the union of continued readiness to listen and partner for the greater good.
During the meeting with CONUA, the Minister reiterated the government’s willingness to collaborate with unions and address their concerns. The CONUA Chairman, Niyi Sunmonu, expressed optimism for a strike-free future with continued government understanding and commitment.
