The Federal High Court in Abuja has invalidated the N800 billion 2024 budget that was signed into law by Rivers State Governor, Simi Fubara. The governor had presented the budget to a faction of the state House of Assembly, consisting of four lawmakers, in December.
After the lawmakers passed the budget, Governor Fubara proceeded to sign it into law. The Rivers State Assembly had become factionalized following a move by 27 lawmakers who were loyal to ex-governor Nyesom Wike, attempting to impeach Governor Fubara.
Presiding over the case, Justice James Omotosho declared that all actions taken by the four lawmakers were null and void. Additionally, the court recognized Martin Amaewhule as the authentic speaker of the state assembly.
This legal development raises questions about the validity of the budget and highlights the ongoing political tensions within the Rivers State Assembly. It remains to be seen how this ruling will impact the state’s fiscal plans and political landscape.
