The federal government has announced its intention to prohibit the use of styrofoam and single-use plastic items in all ministries, divisions, and agencies (MDAs). Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for the Environment, issued this directive during a workshop and capacity-building session for chemicals and waste handlers held on Tuesday, January 30, in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
Commending the state government for taking the initiative, Minister Salako outlined several measures being implemented to advance the circular economy. These measures include the enforcement of national chemical management policies, strengthening relevant policies and institutional frameworks, and enhancing the capacity of producers and manufacturers to embrace cleaner production practices.
During the workshop, the minister emphasized the need for government offices and departments to adhere to the new regulation, highlighting the federal government’s commitment to eliminating the use of single-use plastics. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the State Environment Minister, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, members of the State Executive Council, and representatives from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.
