The Defence Headquarters has expressed concern that the rising incidents of kidnappings across the nation are overshadowing the commendable achievements of the military against terrorist activities in the Northern region. According to Major General Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations, the military, despite facing challenges posed by kidnappings, has made significant strides in combating terrorists, insurgents, and their collaborators.
In a statement released on Friday, Major General Buba Edward highlighted the recent accomplishments of the troops. Over the past week, military forces successfully neutralized 185 terrorists and apprehended 212 individuals involved in such activities. Additionally, 71 abducted citizens were rescued during these operations.
Major General Edward emphasized the military’s commitment to achieving lasting peace, stating, “The military recognizes the urgency for an immediate turnaround of the situation and is therefore actively working for peace and security across the country.” He stressed the importance of addressing the root causes that embolden terrorists and insurgents to engage in acts of violence against fellow citizens.
The statement also detailed the successful efforts of the troops in curbing oil theft, with 44 perpetrators arrested. In the South-South region, the military prevented the theft of an estimated sum of N1,065,885,050.00. Furthermore, the troops recovered 224 assorted weapons and 2,337 assorted ammunition during their operations.
Despite these achievements, the Defence Headquarters acknowledged the pressing need to address the escalating cases of kidnappings, recognizing that lasting peace requires a comprehensive approach to change the conditions that drive individuals to engage in such criminal activities.
